Makawanpur. Leader of the main opposition party in Bagmati State Indra Bahadur Baniya has said that the role of journalists have always been important in strengthening democracy.

Addressing the 16th Annual General Assembly of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, Makawanpur, as a special guest, Baniya said that the Nepali press should be strong both in the NC, Government and in the state. The press should also point out the weakness and publicize the goods deeds done for the people.

He said that the current government has not been able to work fast for the people. He said that the government wanted to do nothing for the people and that the press should only praise. As the press is the backbone of democracy, it is the responsibility of the press to make democracy strong and capable.

Earlier, he also added that the party has been cooperating in various funds set up for the rights of journalists and suggested that the merge process should be started if the Nepali Press is to become stronger. Banks are merging, political parties are merging, so media organizations should also merge with each other to strengthen, said Baniya.
