Middle East War is ‘Out of Control’-UN Secretary-General
UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK — United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued an urgent appeal to the international community for an immediate ceasefire, warning that the ongoing war in the Middle East has spiraled ‘out of control.’
Speaking at a press encounter at the UN Headquarters in New York, Guterres recalled his earlier warnings of a “chain reaction” shortly after the conflict began, noting that the situation has now surpassed even the most unimaginable fears. He emphasized that it is time to stop escalating the conflict and instead choose the path of diplomacy while returning to full respect for international law.
The Secretary-General underscored that the conflict has pushed global economic instability and human suffering to unprecedented levels. Addressing Israel and the United States directly, he urged an end to the war, citing mounting civilian casualties and a devastating global economic impact. He also cautioned Iran to cease attacks on neighbors not party to the conflict and to stop obstructing critical maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz, noting that such blockades are severely affecting the global supply of energy and fertilizers.
Expressing grave concern over regional tensions, Guterres highlighted the deteriorating situation in Lebanon. He called on Hezbollah to stop launching attacks into Israel and urged Israel to halt military operations in Lebanon. The Gaza model must not be replicated in Lebanon, he stated, asserting that civilian safety must remain the top priority. He further warned that the shortages of energy and fertilizer caused by the war could lead to increased hunger and poverty worldwide, leaving developing nations at the highest risk.
To intensify peace efforts, the Secretary-General announced the appointment of Jean Arnault as his Personal Envoy. Arnault will work directly on the ground to lead mediation and diplomatic dialogue. Concluding his remarks, Guterres sent a clear message that war is not the answer and that sincere diplomacy and peace remain the only viable ways out of the current disaster.
