Eighteen Members Elected to National Assembly
KATHMANDU – Eighteen members have been elected to the National Assembly following Sunday’s elections. The newly elected cohort features a mix of fresh faces, youth, and inclusive representation.
The elections were held to fill 18 of the 19 seats becoming vacant on March 4 (Phagun 20). Under the current constitutional provisions, the remaining one seat will be filled through a presidential nomination upon the government’s recommendation.
The election saw a strategic alliance between the Nepali Congress (NC), CPN-UML, and the Loktantrik Samajwadi Party (LSP). Meanwhile, the CPN (Maoist Centre) contested the elections independently. According to the results, all candidates fielded by the alliance emerged victorious.
The electoral college consisted of 1,506 voters, including 550 Provincial Assembly members and 1,506 chiefs and deputy chiefs of local levels across all seven provinces. While some lawmakers and local representatives were absent, their absence did not impact the final outcomes.
The terms for the newly elected members will officially begin on March 5 (Phagun 21). The group includes a diverse range of experience, from veteran leaders who have previously served in the House of Representatives to newcomers entering national politics for the first time.
