NEW YORK- United Nations Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres has expressed grave concern over the rapidly escalating conflicts and geopolitical tensions worldwide, issuing an urgent appeal to renew global commitments to sustainable peacebuilding.<\/p>\n
The UN Secretary-General made the call while addressing the Annual Session of the Peacebuilding Commission held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.<\/p>\n
Guterres noted that the world is currently facing more conflicts and crises than at any point since the Second World War. He stated that rising geopolitical tensions, deepening inequalities, intensifying climate shocks, and the rapid advancement of new technologies without guardrails have introduced unprecedented global challenges.<\/p>\n
He emphasized that these challenging circumstances make the patient and steady work of peacebuilding more critical and necessary today than ever before.<\/p>\n
Highlighting the Commission\u2019s successful track record over the past two decades, the Secretary-General recalled its success in Colombia, where peacebuilding was grounded in local realities with increased participation from women and youth. Similarly, he noted the Commission’s vital role in convening cross-border cooperation in the Sahel region and supporting the first local elections in 30 years in the Central African Republic.<\/p>\n
According to the Secretary-General, the Peacebuilding Fund has taken risks to invest in sustainable peace across more than 70 countries globally. He noted that the Commission’s greatest strength lies in its ability to bring together actors from politics, finance, and development.<\/p>\n
Guterres asserted that this form of mutual coordination is precisely what has made it possible to restore services, rebuild livelihoods, strengthen justice, and renew broken trust for citizens in conflict-affected regions.<\/p>\n
